new stuff! yay!
so, since my last post, i have completed the song Laser Salad (previously named doum, doum, PESH!). You can also find it on my music page.
I also figured out how to do sidechain compression in Ardour (not that hard at all, i'll do a post about it when i have time). so i threw together this cute little dance song which i should finish soon. you can check it out now on my soundcloud page, and soon it will be available for download once i'm done it.
enjoy!

where is it at... again
i have been on and off working on music for the past while, so i figured i'd give an update to where it's at.
so, firstly, remember artifact? well, after being so excited about finding an old copy of artifact, i got down to work on what was at the time called rampant (now called mercury). somehow in my subsequent excitement about it i lost the original file for Artifact again. stupid song. its like the symbol of bad organization. which reminds me. when i'm done with the session i'm currently working on, i need to move it into my "music projects" folder so i don't lose it. (yes, i have finally decided to be organized)
speaking of Mercury, that song is due to be finished soon. i'm hoping that my guitar-ey friend will be available this weekend, and if so then i'm pretty much done. i also want to clean up the mix a bit; at times i think it becomes a bit too "wall of sound"-ey for my taste.
as for Doppelgängster, i kinda lost sight of where that song is going. i'm going to let it sit for a while, and then maybe someday when i'm bored i'll pick it up and do something new with it. but, dubstep fans, fear not! i have another dubstep song in the works, one that doesn't suck nearly as much and hopefully will be awesome! it's pretty much ready for pre-release. its features some beats and stuff from my cousin Shayn, who is really into dubstep and was actually the one who got me into dubstep, as well as explaining, criticizing (constructively, of course), giving ideas, and generally being awesome. He also drums, and we're hoping to do more collaboration once we can afford a proper drum mic-ing setup. so. the song. currently named "doum, doum, PESH!", but, remember, Mercury used to be called rampant, and look what happened (as in, its name changed). yeah.
so that's about it right now. i hope to be posting some audio soon.

Rampant got a new name! and a new intro!
I have added an intro to Rampant, as well as some more effects. And renamed it Mercury. This is still a work in progress; i plan on adding some djembe and guitar fill in the beginning to spice it up a bit. i also plan on doing something to the end of the build-up around 3:25; i think the reverb stuff is a bit overpowering there. anyways, here's the track. its still being processed, but it'll show up when its done.

update: soundcloud seems to be having some server problems, so it might be quite a while till you can hear this.

Doppelgängster v. 0.1!
i finally got Doppelgängster to the point where it's slightly listenable. i know dubsteppers generally hate trance, but i just couldn't resist; there's a little bit of trance-ey sound in the middle. whatever. let me know what you think; feedback, suggestions, comments, leave them either here in the comments page or on the soundcloud page for this song.

along with this, i have made some major changes to Rampant, and i'll upload it when i find the time. Rampant is still not done though; i plan on adding some guitar and hand drums, played by some of my friends to key parts of the song.

more work on rampant!
did some more work on Rampant. i don't know if its done or not, but its getting closer. i added a couple of bass synths, and went crazy with auto panning. here's where it's at now:

Work in Progress - Rampant v. 0.1
I've decided i will go with the 0.x release idea. Basically, 0.x releases won't be available for download, and won't be visible in the music page; only on blog posts and my SoundCloud page. but will be available for people to listen to and comment and suggest what could be improved upon. So: behold! Rampant v. 0.1!
Please let me know what i can do to make this better.
enjoy!

What I am Trying To Accomplish
so, why am i doing all this? why am i releasing music, blogging, and promoting stuff? lots of people do it for fame, recognition, pushing out some sort of message, the desire to let others enjoy a work, or many other reasons. and i hope that someday i can do that. but at this point, i'm a bit too new for that kind of thing. At this point, i'm learning.
really, what i'd like more than listens, views, fame, revenue, or all that stuff, would actually be advice and constructive criticism. maybe someday i'll be pro enough to go for actual musical success, but at this point, publishing is more like a sounding board, so i can hear what people say where i suck, and where i can improve upon. so if i ever start sounding to stuck-up or anything, send me a link to this post, as i have a feeling it will apply to me for the rest of my life.

Old stuff!
Every now and then i'll release an old song. usually my old ones suck, in this case, this is the first song i made using Ardour. I have since lost the original project file, and the last mixdown i made was not up to date, which is actually really tragic; this could have been pretty good. Well, here it is!

Nineteen Sixty-Three Is Not An End, But A Beginning!
New song out, titled Nineteen Sixty-Three!
Nineteen Sixty-Three by dn3s
download: (wav) (FLAC) (mp3) (ogg)
So, that came out a lot sooner than expected. Hopefully this will become a trend :D
In the works right now is an awesome song in 9/8 timing. i think that's all that needs to be said now; hopefully you can get to hear it within a week.
Enjoy!

(PS, you are free to download, share and remix the song. See the Music page for more info)

Music perhaps even sooner than what was previously predicted!
Nineteen Sixty-three is pretty much ready for release, and another song (for which i don't yet have a name) is coming along faster than expected.
I have been considering using a version numbering system similar to software to release my music, so that the first public release of a song is titled <song name> 1.0, and then if i make any changes to the song, it would be re-uploaded as <song name> 1.1, and so on. major remixes would be titled 2.x, 3.x, etc. This would allow me to improve upon music even after it is released. Updating of the music would obviously not be enforced DRM-ically because that would be completely unacceptable (not to mention unfeasible). So it would still be in my best interests to release fully finished songs.
Another idea i have been toying around with is doing 0.x releases, where i could release a song before it is finished so as to get feedback about it before an official release. At this point i don't think i want to do that, but perhaps in the future that could be something i could consider.
Anyways, that's my thoughts for now. I hope to post again soon with download links!

Actual Music Coming Soon!
great news! soon, all of you tens of visitors will get to see more than just a couple of blog posts and a screenshot of me working. actually, that's what you will still see, on the hearing front it will get more interesting. that's right folks, actual songs! instead of waiting until i have like 12 songs, then rejecting several of them and waiting even longer to release an album, i will be doing single releases. when i have enough singles out there, perhaps then i will consider making an album. But expect a new single titled "Nineteen Sixty-Three" out within a couple of weeks, and another one a couple weeks following that.
As for how they will be released:
all dn3s music will be available for FREE download in DRM-FREE formats, and released under a Creative Commons license that will allow sharing, noncommercial remixes. probably wav, mp3, and ogg.
if I get a lot of traffic, i will probably try to capture that in the form of ad revenue, so while piracy of my music is encouraged, please consider linking to my site for downloads, as opposed to sharing the files directly.
Anyways, i'll get this stuff out as quick as i can.
Changes
so, things have changed a bit. my cousin shayn is an amazing percussion player, but at this point the logistics of working together didn't really pan out.
so, it looks like dn3s is going to be me. not so much of a band as an artist name. so yeah. i am dn3s. i'm pretty excited because i am actually making music now, so you should be seeing some actual content soon.

Disorganized DAW Session
perhaps one of the most disorganized DAW sessions you will ever see. This is a screenshot taken while working a song tentatively titled "1963".
while we're at it, here's another screen i had open at the time, pretty much zynaddsubfx and my patchbay, which was also not super organized.

Getting started
Hey everyone, i'm Devon, one of the members of dn3s. we're really new on the scene, and don't even have our first album out yet. at this point, we're kind of busy, so i don't expect progress for a while, but we'll get there. I am sort of the digital guy in the group; i do the mixing and sequencing and all that jazz. basically, dn3s right now consists of me and my cousin teaming up to make electronic music. he is really awesome at percussion of all sorts, but i'll let him introduce himself. in his own post.
so. I run Fedora, with the realtime patched kernel. i get most of the music software from planet ccrma, which is a great repository of music/audio stuff. I currently use Ardour for my audio sequencing, qtractor for midi sequencing (only temporarily until Ardour 3 comes out, which will have built-in midi sequencing), and i simply love using zynAddSubFX for making synths, just because it is so extremely customizable and powerful. and yes, that is correct. it's all open source.
that's all for now, but i'll keep y'all posted.
